2013, the United States government shut down the “dark web” site Silk Road and arrested the operator. While Caitlin Dewey at The Washington Post is correct that it will be much harder to change the culture that The Pirate Bay has helped foster, taking it down, even for just a few days, is a major step in reshaping that culture. That’s because the real success of The Pirate Bay takedown is more symbolic. While I have no doubt they will be defiant when they return, promising new steps to prevent a similar takedown, they’re promises that have already repeatedly been made and, with this raid, shown to be false. However, the damage, simply put, has already been done. Whether it does so later today, tomorrow, next week or next month is irrelevant, I expect it to return.

I fully expect The Pirate Bay to return online. However, to me, that question is largely moot.
